Institute was founded in 1972, the founder was Municipal Assembly Banja Luka and the origin name was „Institute for materials testing Banja Luka". Establishment of the Institute was preceded by work on laboratory tests and quality control of materials built-in objects within the Department for Testing Materials, founded in 1970 in the "Directorate for Reconstruction of Banja Luka," after the 1969 earthquake, when the buildings in Banja Luka were more than 90 % damaged.
14th of February of 1972, the parting of the "Directorate for Reconstruction Banja Luka" established "Institute for Materials Testing Banja Luka." The Institute works across organisational divisions, formed after the purchase of most of the equipment and in that structure works until 1981. By that year the Institute has had a very dynamic development, after the initial 29 employees in 1972, in the 1980, it reaches the number of 96 workers. After 1996, as the first post-war years, the Institute recorded continuous increase in workload.
Chronologically, Institute during its history passed through the following changes:
4th of January, 1990 – registration of the Institute as Social Enterprise Institute for Materials Testing Banja Luka
29th of April, 1991 – Institute is organized as co-partnership, and continues to work under the name Institute for Materials Testing Banja Luka d.d.
28th of January, 1992 – Institute splits on two parts, one remains Institute for Materials Testing Banja Luka d.d. and the second is Institute of Seismology Banja Luka d.d.
27th of February, 1993 the Government of Republic Srpska brought a decision to organize The Institute for Materials and Construction Testing of Republic of Srpska as public company owned by state, which is consisted of:
• Institute for Materials Testing Banja Luka
• Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Engineering Banja Luka
• Laboratory of the Transport Institute in Sarajevo, Mrkonic Grad, Bijeljina, Doboj and Petrovac
22nd of September,1993 at the Basic Court in Banja Luka under the code U/I-16581/93, the Institute was registered as „Public Institution Institute for Materials and Construction Testing of Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka"
1st of June, 1997 Institute was merged with section of Institute for materials testing (IMS) from Belgrade, which by that time was engaged in Banja Luka
